Invoice Payment Terms for Freelancers: Examples and Guide

Payment terms work best when they are agreed before work starts and repeated on every proposal, contract and invoice.

Create a free invoice

Due on receipt

Use for small one-off jobs or final balances where the client has already accepted the work. Define “receipt” clearly.

Net 7 or Net 14

Payment is due 7 or 14 calendar days after the invoice date. Shorter terms usually suit independent freelancers better than Net 30.

Deposit and milestone billing

Collect a percentage before starting, then invoice at specific delivery or approval milestones. State what triggers each invoice.

Late payment language

Example: “Payment is due within 14 calendar days. Any late charge applies only as stated in our signed agreement and applicable law.”

Frequently asked questions

What are the best payment terms for freelancers?

Deposits plus milestone payments reduce risk. For balances, Net 7 or Net 14 is often more practical than waiting 30 days.

What does Net 14 mean?

It means the full invoice amount is due 14 calendar days after the invoice issue date unless the agreement says otherwise.
